Product manufacturers can successfully gain a lot by reducing time to market – TTM, optimizing product designs for optimum performance, and of course to enhance the reliability. Usually, the product design lifecycle, before product launch, aka Product life cycle management – PLM, comprises of:
- Conceptual design
- Detailed design & validation
- Tooling design
- Manufacturing planning and implementation
- Product build and assembly
- Reliability Testing
These more than essential phases, though very primary to PLM, are really time consuming and costly. So usually in most of the PLMs, physical prototypes of the end product are produced and tested for functionality, performance and reliability. The entire process takes a lot of design and manufacturing iterations to produce and deliver acceptable test results prior to the product launch. So hopefully this clarifies why we are of the opinion that primary phases of PLM are time consuming and costly.
Amidst all…
