Autodesk’s Photoelastic Pavilion

The Photoelastic Pavilion was designed and built by Autodesk’s AEC Generative Design Group as the synthesis of research in material simulation and steel stud construction. The custom panels use cross laminated layers of polarized film and plastic to reveal the internal stresses within the material to the naked eye. The structure of the pavilion was designed with HowickMaker, a Dynamo plugin developed by the team, which gives designers the ability to fabricate complex geometry using Howick steel stud roll-forming machines at the Autodesk BUILD Space. The Photoelastic Pavilion was exhibited at the ACADIA and Greenbuild conferences in 2017, and will head to NASCC and AIA conferences in 2018.
