Today is one of my favorite days of the year. My kids? Considerably less so. Yes, it’s back-to-school day here in Connecticut. For me, back-to-school has always represented a fresh start; a new grade, new classes, new books and school supplies. After a summer of hanging out, relaxing and riding my bike, back to school was a time to buckle down, get serious and do some work. Though I’ve been out of school for a while now, this time of year still represents all those things.
That’s why I like to make back-to-school resolutions rather than New Year’s resolutions. New Year’s has always seemed an odd time of the year to make plans. Maybe because I’m from New England and there’s usually a ton of snow on the ground come New Year’s day. Not the best conditions for making optimistic proclamations. No, for me back-to-school is the time to make resolutions.
