Fall is in full swing here in Central Oregon, and it’s not just the changing leaves that make this time of year special. Alongside the vibrant yellows and reds of autumn leaves as well as larch pine needles, the region’s rivers and streams are alive with the incredible sight of spawning trout including bull trout, Chinook and Kokanee salmon. Kokanee salmon are land locked sockeye salmon from Lake Billy Chinook and the chinook are from the ocean making the long challenging migration to spawn.
I have the privilege of volunteering with the Deschutes Land Trust, an organization dedicated to preserving and restoring land to its natural state for future generations to enjoy as well as for the benefit for native wildlife.
