AutoCAD Civil 3D – Label distance between 2 Alignments

In this blog post, I want to explain a workflow on how you can label the distance between 2 different Alignments.

The reason for this blog is a couple of questions I had from customers. The context of the questions is railway design where a surveyed alignment needs to be compared with the designed alignment for maintenance purposes, but there are many more uses cases where this workflow can be useful.

So Let’s get started. The screenshot below shows a section of 2 different alignments, one in blue, the other in red

As described in the introduction I want to add labels, in this vase, every 5 meters, that show the distance between the 2 alignments.

To do that, I will create a new alignment label style

First, I cleared all the text that is added to the label by default, so I can start with a blank canvas,

The trick is now to add reference text in the label contents

Once “Reference Text” is selected, choose for “Alignment” in the type dialog box.
